As a self-professed video game addict, I believe I have had my fair share of gaming time and all but got my hands on every game in playstation 4, specifically for the genre called best exploration games.

This genre particularly stands out for me as it gives the user a vast map to wander, transporting users to a digital landscape, obviously with some preset limitations on interaction with the surrounding.

Often played from the first-person perspective to unravel the story as we go-on completing missions as per the narrative.

SHOW ME THE TOP 20 EXPLORATION GAMES NOW!

Exploration games, also known as adventure games occupy a big chunk of the pie, with approximately 40% of the games released in 2019 under the exploration gaming umbrella. Furthermore, designers are cranking up a notch by introducing interactive stories, in which the narrative of the story changes based on your actions and choices.

best exploration games

Now, let’s look at the certain factors to keep in mind while buying the best exploration games circulating the online and offline shelves.

Factors To Consider While Buying The Best Exploration Games 2020

Given the multitude of products available nowadays, some key factors to look out for before buying a PS4 disk would be:

1. Map

Exploration game users feel they should be awarded for exploring the map. Games, specifically in the genre of the best exploration games, are about escapism. Hence, the design of maps in these games is crucial to a game’s success and playability. I personally long for games in which the layout is peppered with hidden elements that are not blatantly visible in missions or are highlighted in the map.

2. Unique Landscapes

If you ever stood out at night and wondered what it would feel like to visit one of the stars, then these games will cater to your needs to an extent. Games, specifically in the genre of exploration games are about escapism, and one of the best escapes could be the vast space.

Launching you to an epic journey to things you have never seen before. Rom start system to star system or nebulas to nebulas the experience will surely be riveting. And the game can easily book a seat in the best exploration games list.

3. Graphics

With graphics up to 1080p and 30fps, the best exploration games have to withstand the vast layout coupled with in-game dynamics. Anything lower than this will not honor the games purpose of open-world imitation and may also lead to frame rate drops and glitches in the game.

Also, it is always better to have a higher refresh rate as it results in a smoother picture, indirectly not straining your eyes. Such details will generally not be available in the packaging, and you might have to dig a little bit deeper to get the details.

4. Number Of Players

Although this type of games is enjoyed alone which is conducive for an immersive experience, an introduction of a second player in co-op mode may, moreover, complicate things. But hey! What good is it, if you don’t have people to share it with.

5. Online/Offline Mode

Taking the experience online to share, create and explore a new realm sounds only more exciting and thrilling. Try to look out for games that support an online mode making your map limitless and your adventure never-ending.

Keeping in mind the aforementioned key factors to be considered for a quick purchase, here are a few of the best PS4 exploration games available in store.

Let us now look at the collection of our top 20 Best Exploration Games!

Top 20 Best Exploration Games 2020

1. Fallout 4 – PlayStation 4

Fallout 4 - PlayStation 4Fallout 4 from Bethesda is almost impossible to put down, also having been evolved from its predecessors, which themselves are a work of art.

This game fits best in the best games exploration games as it contains comprehensively dense, great locations to explore and freaky monsters to gun-down in a post-apocalyptic scene. The narrative also plays out depending on the subtle choices and the big decisions that you make throughout the game.

Although the game has some bugs and glitches with some dry dialogue, this a great role-playing game with an amazing back-drop to explore. An opening score of 9/10 for this next-generation open-world game.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man – PlayStation 4

Marvel’s Spider-Man - PlayStation 4My personal favorite, Marvels’ Spider-Man 4 is ever more detailed with the characters – Spider-Man and Peter Parker. The game allows you to play with Peter Parker sporadically, making the game more dynamic. A superhero adventure game with a lot of web-swinging and sartorial jibes (yes, Spidey is witty) can never go wrong. At its core, the game makes you feel like Spider-Man with every swing.

However, the world interaction is only restricted to enemies strategically placed around the map and does not allow you to really interact with the surroundings apart from swinging and leaping from one corridor to the next.

With smooth controls and a vast skill set of combos coupled with acrobatic takedowns that you can launch on your enemies, this game can easily be one of the best exploration games, condition, having a superhero – gets it a glittering 9/10.

3. God Of War – Playstation 4

God Of War - Playstation 4God of games, I beg your pardon God of War is a masterpiece of non-stop actions and an inundation of emotions. The game revolves around the relationship between an imaginary Kratos (courtesy Greek mythology) and his son, taking them on a quest to full-fill her final wishes.

The game is meticulously designed that is evident from the game play and the excellent narrative in a continuous camera-shot. From slicing, throwing, ripping enemies to experiencing Kratos first-hand makes the game more captivating.

The game-play makes it a platform to platform, hack and slash game with interactive surroundings for objects which are stationed only as props.

A father-son dynamic so beautifully portrayed this is not just a game but a well-written book that lets you be the protagonist. A reverent score of 9/10, for the mesmerizing experience.

4. Days Gone – Playstation 4

Days Gone - Playstation 4The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world, with the protagonist as a cool bike gangster hitting the open-world map crawling with zombies. The missions become a bit repetitive and the concept is nothing new either.

The developers initially centered the game on driving (in this case riding a bike) and started adding elements and open-world dynamics as the product matured. An assortment of weapons ranging from a shotgun to a crossbow, lets you do the damage as a first person shooter and the melee doubles up as a rudimentary hack and slash mechanic to control.

The introduction of some unique characters, as the game proclaims, results in having only some wild animals and not so interactive ecosystem making even the stealth mode not so full-filling.

Having a not so captivating story line with weary dialogues and barely any “Whoa” moments it scores a 7/10 at best.

5. Monster Hunter: World – PlayStation 4 Standard Edition

Monster Hunter World - PlayStation 4 Standard EditionMonster Hunter: World contains an elaborate, breathtakingly captivating world teeming with exotic looking species. The game features an online support system; when the battle is daunting and the enemy strikes unfathomable, you can take the game setting to the world wide server and team up as co-op to take on enemies.

The game lets you take full advantage of the vast setting as you can explore to craft new weapons, which I found personally really thrilling and satisfying as staying true to the gaming concept of the more you explore the better you upgrade .

The combat is tense and fun and at times can become challenging even to seasoned gamers. With intimidating monsters and comprehensive battle strategies and a place where you feel you can end up living has to score high on the leader board a magnificent 9/10.

6. NieR: Automata – Playstation 4

NieR Automata - Playstation 4Behold the fantasy world which aptly mimics the Japanese obsession with Anime cosplayers. The gamers are pushed to fend off for themselves in a bleak world with vivid gimmicks and creepy monsters.

Having an RPG (role play) style of gaming with hack and slash as the predominant skill with a perfect blend of panache and showmanship, the combat style is magnificent. Not to mention the spectacular work with the background music, that adjusts seamlessly to the current stage scene. A piece of art to experience and revere.

A gripping storyline with subtle intricacies and fluid game control catapults a mere 2-D hack and slash game to one of the best exploration games available – 8.5/10.

7. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands – PlayStation 4

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands - PlayStation 4Boasting a massive open world with terrains ranging from mountains, deserts and grasslands, which by the way play an important role for your tactical strategy, the game sits royally in the open world genre.

The game has an arsenal of modern weapons to choose from covering the entire spectrum from SMG to a grenade launcher, however, the skill tree is only incremental (like running faster or reloading quicker) not so alluring.

Moreover, the missions to become monotonous as you have to drag out bosses y performing the same assortments of tasks by blowing, kidnapping or killing high profile targets.

Best played in co-op mode to take full advantage of the wild lands, earns the game launched by Ubisoft a descent 7.5/10.

8. Far Cry 5 – PlayStation 4 Standard Edition

Far Cry 5 - PlayStation 4 Standard EditionImagine calling out your furry four-legged friend to assist you in killing bad guys or summoning a foul mouthed veteran with a rocket launcher to blow everything up, Far cry 5 staying true to its legacy by captivating gamers with crazy new features coupled with an impressive story line.

This first-person shooter game catapults users to Hope county, a lush green county with scenic views tormented by a cult leader and his followers. A wide open playground packed with loads of action and all the essential ingredients, one can easily get distracted from the main mission, but not a dull moment in the play.

By introducing features like guns for hire and the game supporting online co-op campaign mode would earn it a solid 8.5/10. For those who are persistent enough to complete the last mission, a special reward, in terms of the story, awaits at the end of the game.

9. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition – PlayStation 4 Complete Edition

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Complete Edition - PlayStation 4 Complete EditionThe Witcher started out as a story and later was adapted as a game in 2015, whose popularity spurred a series adaptation under the same title Witcher, is regarded as one of the best shows to release on the online platform, Netflix.

As for the game, with a majestic story arc that molds itself as you make critical decisions encompassing the open-world map where you encounter mythical creatures of all shapes and forms, there are moments that will certainly give you goosebumps.

You play as a grey-haired hybrid homosapien who is skilled with his sword and has an array of magic tricks up his sleeve to enable us to fight dragons and slay monsters as we embark on a journey to save our daughter.

Having a wild, fun and exhilarating open-world playing experience enabling many use of its combat styles makes it a thrilling experience for even the most jaded RPG player.

An immersion through next-gen graphics and top class storytelling with an impressive array of characters, the witcher wild hunt complete edition could easily be one of the best exploration games the console has to offer and elevates it to a plain few other RPGs inhabit – 9.5/10.

10. Mafia III – PlayStation 4

Mafia III - PlayStation 4Playing as an African American in the backdrop of New Orleans, circa 1960, this game does not shy away from the situation that America was dealing in that era. With diverse architecture and gator pools it will take you to settings that you could hardly find in any video game.

The combat style leans towards a third person shooter but I personally find taking down enemies with a stealth move more rewarding. Having said that, the enemies AI lacks tuning for self-preservation and the scene quickly turns into an all-out shooting rampage.

However, the game succumbs to the plague of repetitive missions and the open-world map is a little insipid in terms of interaction and exploration.

With heavy thematic settings and the game enabling you to occupy territories corroborated with strong characters, Mafia III scores a 7/10.

11. Mad Max – Playstation 4

Mad Max - Playstation 4Hitting the desert plains in a lookalike Mustang which is turned into a warrior carriage thanks to our beloved mechanic, gaming elements like speed and action is central to its design.

The action both behind the wheel and on foot is thrilling with balanced mechanics for shooting and hand to hand combat. The game escapes the dreary and the dry open world map with creative take-downs while you are behind the wheel and cathartic style battles to take down warlords

Although, the game does not do much justice with the open-world concept, but the overflowing action accompanied by fancy mission objectives earns it a well-deserved 8/10.

12. Jurassic World Evolution – PlayStation 4 Edition

Jurassic World Evolution - PlayStation 4 EditionComing under a glamorous franchise of Jurassic Park, the game had to live up to the hype and so it did. As a 90’s kid, having played simulation games like zoo tycoon and roller-coaster tycoon on a P.C, I was a little anxious as to how will the game adapt to a playstation console. And upon playing the game I was thoroughly surprised with the ease of controls.

As a player, your mission is to build and manage zoo parks in different sandbox locations. Although, the dinosaurs, the main attractions, are detailed and meticulously designed the game lacks any variety. No flying or swimming dinosaurs can be found and moreover, performing the same sequence of clicks to unlock a new dinosaur makes the experience after a while -perfunctory and tedious.

With hardly any evolution for dinosaurs in Jurassic World Evolution the game is at best a park simulation – 6/10.

Death Stranding - PlayStation 4Some might relegate this magnum opus by the legendary game developer Hideo Kojima as a walking simulator but then they are awarded the epithet “illiterates of the gaming world”. This masterpiece is obviously not for everyone but only for the people who can endure. It is more than a game rather an experience, at best described as complicated. 7 Days to Die - PlayStation 4A survival game set in a zombie apocalypse world, 7 days to die has all the elements of fun and adventure. The game, however, has sub-par graphics with frame rate drops and glitches at every turn. Not to forget, that the game is not complete and can be updated with new content every once in a while

Introducing a co-op mode (split screen) and downloadable content (DLC) brings some dynamics and zest into an otherwise tedious and grinding game play – 6/10.

15. Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition – PlayStation 4

Dark Souls III The Fire Fades Edition - PlayStation 4Catering to the old-school non open-world RPG style of gaming Dark Souls III is best enjoyed for its beautifully designed stage settings and captivating bass battles.

The game controls are initially hard to master, controls which you cannot customize and the protagonist lacking natural abilities like jumping and sliding it gets a little frustrating at first but once you get past that you will be addicted to the powerful journey.

With its rich lore and getting the thrill by overcoming even the most exacting challenges the game scores well – 8.5/10.

The game features fancy new gadgets which are ludicrously entertaining, for instance the air lift balloon that lets you whoosh away everyone and everything to the heavens. It is a fun game with naturally repetitive objectives like go there and kill that.

With mindless chaotic fun and extremely entertaining for short bursts, gets it an 8/10.

Ark Survival Evolved - PlayStation 4Games exist to live up to your childhood fantasies, picture revving up a machine gun on a wooly mammoth while riding a T-rex. Sprawling vast landscapes dotted with evolutionary creatures of all kinds, ARK: survival evolved is a must play.

Apart from the balanced AI tuning for all the exotic creatures it has to offer and few frame rate drops here and there, the game can also be enjoyed in co-op (split screen mode), however there is a tether to the host player- meaning both parties cannot be separated more than 250m.

It will bound to engage you for hours and with a few visual glitches that does not impede the playing experience, ARK: Survival Evolved is loads of fun- 8.5/10.

Regarded as one of the best hunting games that mimic real-life elements coupled with breath-taking graphics and huge reserves to wander. It has a progression style sandbox gaming design, while some people might find the game a little mechanical in terms of variety.

A hunt worth taking one, Hunter: call of the wild is easily one of the best hunting simulation games available in modern systems – 8/10.

The Sinking City (PS4) - PlayStation 4A psychological thriller, the game fits best in the adventure-investigation, open-world concept. Portraying a dark and despairing atmosphere the characters are mostly aggressive or depressed and you as a detective have to unravel a murder mystery.

While the game could have done better with the dynamics of surrounding interaction and better dialogue writing could have made the experience much better. The protagonist having a solemn disposition and the way he speaks commands reverence and makes you feel you are in-charge.

I highly recommend this game for people who have an eye for horror and mystery – 7/10.

By far the best features of the game are the variety of landscapes it has to offer from snowy mountains to parched desserts.

It enables users to unlock secrets along the way with sites to discover and interesting enemies to meet. One of outwards biggest features is that it allows to play double player in split screen or via remote mirroring, however, the combat style is just a combination of very basic moves – hit, dodge, repeat.
